There's been something bothering me about the Franz Josef Country Retreat ever since we arrived. There's just something not quite right about it - it's a strange old-fashioned building in the middle of nowhere - and has been giving me the creeps. Thankfully, it's not just me - Michael feels the same way. I couldn't put my finger on it, but felt like something out of a movie - the ancient portrait photographs on the wall, the lights fading in and out as the power fluctuates, the creepy corridors, almost haunted ... then he hit the nail on the head when he said being here reminded him of The Shining. That's it! I swear, any minute now I'm going to see a little kid come past our room on a tricycle ...

We found the gondola, about a 15 minute drive out of town towards Lyttleton, so we went up to take some pictures (got some good ones - see my Flickr page). Once up there we found a really nice restaurant at the top; after a 20 minute wait for a table we got seated and have a real slap-up meal! Scallops to start, the best lamb (NZ of course!) I think I've ever tasted and we all helped to demolish the huge cheese board!

Breakfast turned out to be the strangest Eggs Benedict I've ever had. Diana, our "host", even said (as she plonked the plates down on our table and shuffled away) that "these are the worst Eggs Benedict I've ever made ... hope they're OK". This place is just like Fawlty Towers, I kid you not!
